Dairy Worker Stress Management Fotonovela and Training Available - January 22, 2025
The "Stress Less for Better Health" comic book is now available for farmworkers, in both English and Spanish on our Posters page. This booklet was created in response to requests from dairy workers for stress management materials, and serves as a companion to the new training module now available to NY farms through NYCAMH. Anna Meyerhoff, bilingual educator, worked with well-known illustrator and public health educator Salvador Sáenz to create a colorful and easy to read bilingual comic book about farmworker stress management.
A fotonovela is a comic book style booklet. This format is common in Mexico and other Latin American countries, especially for educating learners about health topics. Fotonovelas use images and dialogue to tell a story. Salvador Sáenz is a talented illustrator and public health educator based in El Paso, Texas. He has created many popular comic books, and has worked with NYCAMH on several other projects that feature his beautiful drawings.
This fotonovela tells the story of Luis, a worker at a dairy farm who is feeling restless. His coworker Paco teaches him about stress and lets him know how to recognize and control it. Luis learns easy stress management techniques used by other dairy workers which include connecting with others, physical activity, creativity and mindfulness. The last page also includes space for workers to write out three things to improve their stress.
NYCAMH has also developed a free bilingual stress management training in response to requests from Spanish-speaking dairy workers. In this discussion-based class, participants discover the impact of stress on their thoughts, emotions and physical health. They learn easy ways to feel better, based on expert advice as well as recommendations from other dairy workers.
